Shirt jackets are a functional and stylish layer, so they’re the best of both worlds! Today, I’m sharing a roundup of ways you can wear a shirt jacket.

First, What Is A Shirt Jacket?
While stores sell items that they actually label as shirt jackets, I also think shirt jackets are fairly subjective. I wear a button up and a lightweight jacket as a shirt jacket too. So, to me, it’s pretty much anything with buttons that you can use as a lightweight layer over another top or dress. Shirt jackets come in all different fabrics, so they’re quite versatile.

How To Style A Shirt Jacket
One of my favorite things about a shirt jacket is the outfit options are pretty endless. You can style them over a dress, with a pair of jeans, or with a pair of trousers for a day at work. I also included an outfit below for how to style a shirt jacket if you live somewhere warm.
Wear Your Shirt Jacket With A Belt
Okay, first up is this shirt jacket with a belt. You can easily recreate my outfit with this navy shirt jacket. I’m also wearing a knit shirt jacket and simply put a belt on it to give it a little more shape. I love this black leather belt to go with the navy jacket option. I would still wear straight leg jeans and combat boots!
My combat boots are old, but I love these jeans. I have them in a darker wash, and I’ve been wearing them so much that I’m considering the pair I linked below too.
Button Up Shirt As A Shirt Jacket
If you live in a warmer climate, use a regular shirt like a cotton or linen button up as your shirt jacket. I love this style, and I wear it all summer to help protect my arms from the sun. To be totally honest, my arms are also not my favorite feature, so wearing a button up over a fitted tank top also just makes me feel more confident. You can shop my exact button up here. It’s 100 percent organic cotton, and it washes and dries without any issue. It also comes in tons of different colors and fabrics, but this is my favorite since it’s so versatile. Be sure to size down one size.
Shirt Jacket With A Sweater
This type of shirt jacket outfit is a good option if you live in a place where you need layers in the fall. You can wear this as your entire look, or you can use the shirt jacket as your coat. When you get where you’re going, your outfit is a skirt, sweater, and boots.
This shirt jacket is the most similar I could find to the one I’m wearing, and this one is similar and at a better price point. My exact outfit is old, but I put together an outfit below that is the same vibe. The boots I linked are actually the same, but they’re ecru instead of green. I basically just took an oversized shirt jacket and layered it over a super cozy sweater. Instead of pairing it with flats, I went with a knee high boot with a heel. I was pregnant in this photo, and I felt really put together!

Suede is everywhere right now, but it’s one of those trends that’s actually pretty classic. Suede shirts, skirts, and accessories have been around forever. You can wear a suede shirt jacket to work or just as part of a casual look. They’re the perfect shirt jacket for fall, winter, and spring. I love to use mine as an outer layer for fall and spring. And, suede is pretty easy to layer over, so you can wear your winter coat when you’re going from one place to another.
