Hi there! Spring is a fun time to experiment with layers, so let’s look at how to style sweater vests this spring since it’s one of the classic layering pieces. First of all, if you’re a little skeptical of sweater vests, I am with you! But, I ended up wearing them a lot when I was pregnant! I realized they’re a great transitional piece to take you through spring and, later in the year, into fall.

Wearing A Sweater Vest In Warm Weather
Sweater vests sound like something you would only wear when it’s cold, but they’re made in tons of warm weather materials. And, you don’t always have to layer your sweater vest!
I love a linen or cotton sweater vest paired with linen pants. You can dress them up or dress them down just by changing your shoes. This type of outfit is perfect to pack for a spring or summer vacation! I love this type of look for a winery trip or for a vacation where you’re going to spend time walking around. You’ll be comfortable and keep cool during warm days. I linked two linen sweater vests below, but I also love this one and it comes in such pretty color options.
Wearing A Sweater Vest For Work
There’s something super tailored about a sweater vest under a coordinating cardigan with trousers. I love this look for the office. But, it’s a super polished look that you could also wear with different shoes while on a city vacation. These pieces don’t wrinkle easily, so they’re good options to pack for travel, whether you’re going somwhere for fun or for a work trip.
You Can’t Wrong Sweater Vest Styling Tip
If you like the idea of a sweater vest but you aren’t sure where to start, I recommend just wearing it with jeans! Just pair your favorite jeans with whatever sweater vest you have your eye on, and add shoes for the season. I’d go for a sweater vest that you can tuck in and wear with a belt. Or, you can wear a white t-shirt or a neutral linen t-shirt under the vest and wear the vest open. This is a classic look that’s easy to put together.
How To Style A Sweater Vest When You’re Pregnant
One of my favorite ways to style a sweater vest for spring is with a dress. I wore this look a lot when I was pregnant because it was so comfortable, and I felt good in it! For me, being comfortable and feeling a little bit like myself was key when I was dressing during my pregnancy.
Anyway, for this type of look, I would go for a loose fitting cotton, cashmere, or wool blend sweater vest. You want it to lay nicely over the dress so it doesn’t bunch up. And, you need room for your bump! I typically sized up in pieces like this when I was pregnant. You can pair a sweater vest with all types of dresses, but I prefer a shirt dress. Fabric matters for this outfit! Avoid a summery dress material like linen, and look for a cotton or cotton blend dress instead!
Sweater Vest Outfit Ideas
Matching Sweater Vest & Cardigan
This look will take you from the office to a city vacation. I’ve been eyeing this sweater vest since it came out because I think coordinating pieces look so chic. You can wear these two pieces with jeans, a slip skirt, linen shorts, or work pants. I’m including this photo so you can see what the cardigan looks like on me. I’m wearing a size small, and it runs true to size.
The Trusted Sweater Vest And Jeans
This is a trusted, classic look that you can wear throughout the entire year. Just pick a sweater vest and shoes that are appropriate for the current season. Okay, I can never pass up a monochrome look opportunity. I love the open knit sweater vest (second in the photo) for spring. I think it would look so cute with these ecru jeans. The first sweater vest in the photo is linen, and it just looks like it will drape perfectly and be comfortable. You can wear either of these tops and the jeans with mesh ballet flats to be on-trend. You might also add a belt to this look to break up the outfit a little bit!
Oversized Sweater Vest And Shirt Dress
Like I mentioned earlier, I loved this look when I was pregnant. However, it’s a great option to wear when you aren’t pregnant. This white button up dress or white shirtdress is perfect to layer with the oversized sweater vest from the same brand. I love it with a pair of ballet flats or sneakers. You can also wear this shirtdress with a belt or by itself when you aren’t wearing the sweater vest over it. All of these shoes give this look a spring vibe. You can pair this with knee high boots or even booties and a blazer in the fall!
Oversized Sweater Vest To Layer
I was super pregnant in this photo, and I was so comfortable in this outfit! I love how I was able to achieve a layered look for dressing between seasons with this oversized sweater vest. And, this outfit works whether you’re pregnant or not. I wore this outfit in the fall, but it’s definitely something I’d wear in the spring too. I linked a navy blue sweater vest and a few blouses that I think would look really nice together!
If you’re pregnant, you could also wear this look with a pair of baggy jeans! Comfort is key.
Linen Sweater Vest Or Cotton Sweater Vest With Linen Bottoms
Linen is your best friend if you live in a hot and humid area like I do here on the US East Coast. The weather can reach the 80s even in the spring, and I know it’s even warmer, even earlier in other places! I love how a linen sweater vest or a cotton sweater vest with linen bottoms creates an effortless and chic look. This type of outfit will keep you cool during warm months.
