Can You Wear a Sweater Under a Blazer? Yes! Here’s How

Hi there! Are you embracing fall fashion where you are? I just love this time of the year because the weather tends to be perfect for blazers. Sometimes it might seem too cold outside for a blazer, but there are plenty of ways you can layer a sweater with a blazer for extra warmth. Or, you might go for a sweater blazer that you can wear under your coat. I’ve always loved to wear both, so here are a few tips, sweater recommendations, and outfits for keeping cozy with a blazer this season.

Can You Wear a Sweater Under a Blazer?

Okay, the answer is obviously yes or I wouldn’t be writing this post, ha! I actually love wearing a sweater under blazers. I have tips for how to wear a sweater under a blazer, but first, here are some specific sweaters that are good options for layering.

How To Wear A Sweater Under a Blazer

Avoid Bulky Sweaters

You definitely want to avoid a bulky sweater under a blazer. For example, your favorite oversized sweater that you wear to feel super cozy probably won’t be as comfortable under a blazer. Even if you manage to fit your arms through, you’ll probably notice it looks bunched up or otherwise awkward around the neckline. I always know my sweater is too bulky for a blazer when I can’t move my arms around or the neckline looks weird!

A Sleeveless Sweater Almost Always Works

Do you ever think how a sleeveless sweater just feels like an oxymoron? I do. So, if you’re like me and ever wondered when in the world you might wear a sleeveless sweater, this is the time! You don’t have to wear a long sleeve sweater! I love sleeveless wool or cashmere tops for the fall. They’re perfect to wear under blazers, cardigans, and other jackets. Plus, you can wear them again in the spring.

How To Mix And Match Fabrics

Mixing fabrics can feel intimidating, especially if you’re wearing different colors – or maybe even more so if they’re the same. If you’re wearing a suiting blazer or some sort of wool blazer, you can wear pretty much any type of sweater under it, whether that’s cotton, wool, or cashmere. If you’re wearing a velvet blazer, I’d go for a wool or cashmere since velvet is truly a cold weather material.

Blazer And Sweater Outfits And A Few Sweater Blazer Outfits

Okay, I hope that didn’t sound like a riddle. Basically, I’ve included outfits below with sweaters under blazers and I also included a few sweater blazers – the best of both worlds.

Sleeveless Sweater With A Blazer

My sleeveless sweater is perfect to wear under a slightly oversized blazer, whether you’re going to work or out to dinner. It comes in several colors! I also tried on and loved black, but I only wanted to purchase one. One of the best things about wearing a sweater with a blazer is it can be a casual outfit or it can be work appropriate. I love outfits like this that do both!

The blazer below is a similar fit. I’ve tried it on in gray in store and absolutely love it, but they didn’t have the tan. Be sure to size down one full size. I wear a 00 in the blazer I linked, and I am not typically a 00. Shop my bag here. Don’t be afraid of this light leather color – this bag has been through everything. From sitting on the floor, being stuffed in another bag, getting kicked under the seat in the car, and it still looks brand new. I don’t know how it holds up so well, but it’s in perfect condition and I definitely haven’t treated it with the care I should!

Cashmere Crewneck Sweater With Full Length Sleeves Under A Blazer

My exact cashmere crewneck sweater, which comes in tons of colors, is one of the sweaters I turn to the most to layer under blazers and other jackets. It has full length sleeves, but they aren’t puffy. This sweater is pretty much perfect to wear by itself or layer. Plus, it always elevates a casual outfit. It is a good quality sweater too. I’ve had several of them throughout the course of many, many years, and I rarely need to replace them – I just end up purchasing new colors! Click here to shop my exact jeans.

Black Sweater Blazer And Sleeveless Sweater

One of the things about layering a sweater under a blazer is you don’t necessarily need it for aesthetics. Sometimes, you just want a little extra warmth or a layer between yourself and your blazer. My sweater blazer (see it on me here) is the perfect thing to wear if you don’t want to deal with lots of layers. You can wear it with a thin sweater underneath! Plus, it’s perfectly tailored.

Oversize Blazer With A Ribbed Sweater

My ribbed cashmere sweater is definitely chunkier than you might think would fit under a blazer. However, the reason it works is because the sleeves on my sweater are fairly fitted. Plus, my blazer is more oversized than a traditional blazer. This photo is one of the first photos I took for my blog after having my little babe, so if you’re thinking I look exhausted, you are correct.

Oversize Blazer With A Ribbed Sweater

Everything I’m wearing is old, so I’ve recreated this look with in stock items. The sweater is the same, but this color isn’t available so far this season. The blazer I linked is the same brand as mine, and it also has welt pockets.

Navy Blue Sweater Blazer

I found a similar navy blue sweater blazer to the one I’m wearing, which is sadly old. It’s not exact, but it has the same shape around the midsection, which is exactly what I love about the one I’m wearing. The lines don’t add extra width, and it cinches in at the perfect spot. The one I linked is even better because it doesn’t have pockets on the front. I am so excited to wear this again this fall and winter! This cashmere tank top is perfect to wear underneath, and it comes in navy! I love mine.

I’m wearing a sleeveless black wool tank top under mine, which is a good option to wear under other blazers. This one is cashmere, but it’s a similiar fit to the one I’m wearing.

Sweater Dress Under A Blazer

A sweater dress is another type of sweater you can definitely wear under a blazer. If you need to layer a sweater dress, a blazer is one easy way to do it. I recreated my outfit below, and my sunglasses are exact. I love this type of monochrome look. You can wear this in so many ways by ditching the hat, ha! You can make this a casual outfit too – just wear sneakers!
