Hi there! I’m so happy the holiday season is here. Growing up, my family went to a Christmas tree farm every year to pick out and cut down a tree. I have so many memories of it snowing when we were there, and my brother and I running around before enjoying hot chocolate. I don’t get to a real Christmas tree farm these days, but I love stopping by the Christmas tree stands in the city. In fact, Washington has quite a few, which is where I was for these photos.
So, while picking out a tree is not the event it was for me as a child – although I do hope to share that experience with my own child one day – I still like to dress for the occasion! Visiting a Christmas tree stand is also a fun date idea! Maybe I’m thinking a little too much of a Hallmark movie, ha! Okay, let’s get to the point of the post – what to wear for Christmas tree or holiday wreath shopping!

Key Pieces for Christmas Tree Farm Outfit Ideas or Holiday Wreath Shopping Looks
Comfortable Pants
This is the look I wore to browse the Christmas tree stand we love. I live in these jeans and this soft brown sweater. I was expecting to bundle up a bit more in a puffer jacket, but the temperature was just right for a fleece. My boots (similar here) were perfect because the ground was a little soft from a recent rain. Anyway, these jeans are just so comfortable, and they fit perfectly. You can choose which length you want, which is a dream when you’re on the shorter side like I am.
Cozy Layer
The cashmere top I’m wearing above is a staple for me. I just love it, and I wear it all the time. This sweater comes in so many different colors too, so there’s an option for any wardrobe. Bloomingdales also has its own cashmere line, and they have quite a few colors and sweater styles. I own a cardigan from their line, and it has held up very well with lots of wear – both at home and out!

Fleece or Sherpa Jacket Like A J.Crew Fleece Jacket
Sherpa and teddy jackets are so warm, but they’re also stylish! You can find a cozy sherpa jacket in lots of stores, so you’ve got options. But, J.Crew makes some of the best fleece jackets, and they’re often on sale this time of the year.
Free People also has an oversized fleece that would be perfect for Christmas tree shopping. Click here to see it on me! The Free People fleece is really heavy, which is obviously perfect for cold winter days. It runs a little big, so I suggest sizing down one size. Anyway, I love this type of jacket in general because you can layer under it with something super warm or something lighter weight.
Shearling Jacket
If you’re a city gal, how cute would a shearling jacket be to wear with jeans, the cashmere sweater above, and boots for a stop by a Christmas tree stand and hot chocolate? Mango makes the best faux shearling coats, so I picked two here.
The long shearling coat is quite the investment for a winter coat – it’s one that would be worn forever. Perhaps over the top for a Christmas tree stand stop, but I know there are gals out there who may stop by on their way home from work or just need a coat that warm!
Puffer Coat
Puffer coats are tried and true winter coats, aren’t they? I know I wore them all the time growing up, and I still love them today – paired with a big cozy scarf! I own this scarf in two colors, and they’re two of my most worn pieces in the colder months. They’re the perfect size and so, so warm.
You might be wondering why I included a denim jacket. Well, it’s actually a puffer coat! I saw it in person in store, and I keep thinking about it! I was so curious about what it would look like, and it is very cute. It would pair well with jeans and a neutral color sweater or with a skirt – similar to how it’s styled on the model.
Varley also makes the chicest outerwear and cozy clothes – all of which you can wear for the occasion!
Comfortable Shoes and Cozy Socks
Okay, this one is pretty obvious. Depending on where you’re going, be sure to wear comfortable footwear and socks to keep your feet warm! I always talk about how much I love these J.Crew cashmere socks. I own a couple of pairs, and I wear them all the time! They have a color for any outfit, including a festive red for the holidays – kind of perfect for Christmas tree shopping.
Sneakers and boots are both great options for a Christmas tree stand. If you’re headed to a real Christmas tree farm, I’d probably go for boots like these.
Just a few more thoughts before I go…
A Christmas tree farm or city stand is such a nice family moment too, so you might want to take a few quick family photos. I took quite a few with my little babe while we visited that might make our Christmas cards!
