Hi there! Thanks for stopping by today. I’m writing this blog post on white button ups because they’re the perfect top for so many occasions. A white button up is a true wardrobe essential that you can wear in any season. I love how you can easily dress them up or down! While they might seem like a simple top, there are so many ways to make them look super chic.
Here are a few white button ups I love that I think work with the outfit ideas I’ve put together below.
How to Style a Classic White Button Up Shirt Throughout The Year
Okay, let’s look at a roundup of ways you can style a classic button up shirt for different things you might do – these are ways I love to wear mine.
Wear With Linen Pants
A white linen button up is a one of those summer pieces you can wear again and again. I love how this type of shirt looks when worn untucked with linen pants for a super relaxed look. You can style this type of outfit with sandals, espadrilles, or even kitten heels (I love this pair)! Alternatively, you can give this type of outfit a professional glow up. In the photo above, I had the office in mind. I’m wearing a cotton button up with linen pants and work appropriate shoes. My belt was gifted!
Style With A Neutral Blazer And Jeans
Are you running out the door and not sure what to wear? It’s easy to throw on the first thing you see when you’re in a rush, and there’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable in your outfit. So, this is one of my go-to outfits all year, but especially during the spring, fall, and winter. If you want to feel put together and are short on time, a white button down, an oversized neutral blazer, jeans, and shoes for the season will never fail you. I turn to this outfit time and time again, and I always feel chic, comfortable, and confident. What’s better than that!
Pair A White Button Up With A Midi Or Mini Skirt
Once summer rolls around, you’ll get tons of use out of a white linen button up. It gets incredibly humid here in DC, so a linen button up with a midi or mini skirt is a go-to outfit to keep you chic without overheating. I’ve been eyeing this white mini skirt with a rickrack trim ever since I saw it styled with this white button up! It’s such a cute set, but you can wear them as separates as well.
Pregnancy Friendly Outfit: Wear Button Up Over A Dress For Spring, Summer, And Fall
Mini or midi fitted dresses are so cute with a white button up over them. Opting for a plain white button up means you won’t distract from the dress! And, it adds a little extra coverage for temperature or your own comfort! I loved this outfit formula with a midi dress when I was pregnant! You can see me in this exact dress below, which I wore through my entire pregnancy. I’m wearing a size small and the dress stretched without any issue when I was late in my pregnancy.
The first two dresses I linked are pregnancy friendly. The famous Nap Dress (I love this one in red stripes) is also pregnancy friendly!
Pair With Slingbacks And Jeans For Dinner
I love how a white button up looks with jeans and slingbacks. It’s such an elegant outfit, and it’s flattering on everyone. You could go for blue, black, gray, or white denim – they all work. It’s perfect for a casual date night or a dinner with friends. I styled this outfit with a super lightweight button up, but you can create this look with your favorite one.
Click here to see these jeans on me and shop them – they’re one of my favorite jeans, and I wear them all the time. I’m wearing size 28 in the video I linked, but I also have them in size 27. They’re true to size!
Wear Under A Dress For Work
If you’re looking for a way to style your button up for work that isn’t with a pair of work pants or a skirt, then try wearing it under a dress. Button ups fit perfectly under work dresses, including some dresses that might surprise you. This v-neck linen midi dress pairs perfectly with a button up, and there are plenty of sheath dresses you can layer a button up under too – all year! This outfit looks just as nice with kitten heels as it does with knee high boots.
Pair With Denim Shorts
I am one of those gals who would love to be able to wear shorts, but I just don’t think they are flattering on me. But, I still look for a pair each summer. I’ve heard amazing things about Abercrombie jean shorts and Agolde jean shorts. Anyway, if you are a shorts gal, then you should definitely give this look a try. Just like jeans and a white button down are a classic outfit, so are jean shorts and a button down! For shoes, I would go for sandals or espadrilles. Don’t forget to add a belt – I like a neutral belt for this type of outfit to keep it classic.
Style With Joggers For Travel
Don’t be afraid to pair an oversized button down with comfortable joggers or another pair of sweatpants for travel. This is the perfect outfit for long haul trips, whether you’re flying, driving, or taking a train. Button ups are easy to layer with a cardigan to keep warm, or wear your button up with a tank top underneath like I am here! When it’s summer, you might also wear this with sweatpant shorts – although I’d probably only choose this outfit for the car – I hate flying in shorts!
Style Open With A Tank Top Underneath
This is definitely one of my favorite ways to wear a classic button up shirt, whether it’s white or another color. I recently wore a blue button up with a fitted tank top under it for an early morning appointment. Anyway, I went with a navy blue tank top in the photo below (hello from 2021 me), but you can easily style this with another solid color or stripes. I recently purchased this tank top in white and love how it fits. Since I’ve been wearing it so much, I’ve been eyeing it in stripes to wear under my button ups too.
Wear With Espadrilles
If you have a favorite white button down you’d like to give a fresh summer vibe, then espadrilles are the perfect shoe for your look. They go with linen pants, skirts, and denim, and they scream summer! Espadrilles are a great option to pack for a city or a beach vacation, too. Even open toe espadrilles have a little layer of protection for your feet that you don’t get from all sandals. You really can’t go wrong with espadrilles, and there are so many style options that you’ll be able to find a pair that elevate your look or keep it casual. I recently bought this pair, which is the first pair I linked below, in black. I love them!
Wear With A Cardigan
Your favorite pants, a button down, and a cardigan is a timeless and effortless outfit for work or for the weekend. It’s a simple outfit formula and it won’t ever let you down! An oversize cardigan is especially cozy (and my go-to) for this type of outfit. I like to accessorize with a belt and jewelry.
Okay, that’s all from me today! Thanks so much for stopping by. Did you find a new way to style a button up? Let me know in the comments.
