Hello, hello! How was your weekend? It felt like it flew by for me. We were out of town for a short bit of it, and then right back to running errands! Anyway, let’s talk about one of everyone’s favorite cold weather pieces – sweater dresses! They’re a fall and winter closet staple if you ask me. I love that they tend to come in neutral color options so you can really get a lot of wear out of them. With so many different styles, lengths, and necklines, there’s kind of a sweater dress outfit for everyone no matter what you’re doing.
Sweater Dress Outfits
Okay, there really are so many different ways to style a sweater dress, which is why I think they’re essential this time of the year. They look cute no matter how you style them, and there are plenty of outfits you can build around a sweater dress. So, let’s dive in!

How to Style a Sweater Dress For All Different Occasions
I’m sharing a roundup of sweater dress outfits for all types of things – whether you’re getting dressed for work, family photos, running errands, or you’re pregnant and need something comfortable – I’ve been there!!
How to Style a Sweater Dress for Family Photos
Let’s start with family photos since I know it’s that time of the year. A midi sweater dress is the perfect option for fall family photos. I knew I wanted a midi dress since I would be picking up and moving around baby, but this brown midi sweater dress fit the fall vibe I was looking for even better than I hoped! We went with all neutrals, and they turned out beautifully!
I’m wearing a size US 4 in this dress. I could’ve worn a size US 6 as well for a bit of a looser fit, but I liked how this sweater dress came with a tie-waist because it helped me feel confident around my stomach area. I also tried this dress with a leather belt, and it looked really cute too. You can shop my outfit below, or here – where you can also see this outfit in motion from a video I took during family photos.
Sweater Dress and On-Trend Metallic Accessories
Metallics are everywhere right now! I think they’re really fun. While I typically gravitate towards gold these days, I love metallic silver accessories paired with a classic piece like a sweater dress. This is such a good time of the year to wear a metallic look like the one below for a holiday party or a holiday dinner. Your outfit will be on trend, and you’ll still stay warm!
This perfume is one of my absolute favorites. It smells so good! I’m someone who needs to smell perfumes before committing to them, so if you’re like that too, I highly recommend this gift set of 10 scents – it includes the Luna scent I suggested too. I own this gift set, and I really love them all.
Off The Shoulder Sweater Dress for Holiday Parties
Okay, this dress is so cute for holiday parties. The off the shoulder detail is gorgeous! I paired it with these over the knee brown leather boots because I just love how sweater dresses and boots look together this time of the year. Ankle boots work with some of these looks, but I really love taller boots with most sweater dresses. Okay, anyway, you could also wear this with black suede over the knee boots I share later in this post, but I love how the brown boots and bag look with the dress.
I’ve included these David Yurman pieces in several outfit ideas throughout this post, but that’s because I think you should wear them with anything and everything if you own them or buy them! They are such timeless pieces, and I love how they instantly elevate your outfit.
How to Wear a Sweater Dress With Sneakers When You’re Pregnant
If you’re pregnant, I can’t recommend a sweater dress enough. I basically lived in a couple of sweater dresses last year this time when I was waiting for baby to show up! The outfit below was one of my favorites to wear while I was pregnant. I was so comfortable, and sweater dresses look great with sneakers – which is pretty much all I was wearing! I love to wear a tailored coat over a sweater dress to help dress it up, even if you’re wearing sneakers. Speaking of sneakers, I linked the absolute best sneakers if you’re pregnant – same style that I’m wearing.
Styling a Sweater Dress and a Blazer
Okay, I’m obviously pregnant in the outfit below too, but the thing I love about all of these pregnancy looks is they are great fall and winter options even if you aren’t pregnant. I wore these exact outfits before and after my baby was born too! There’s nothing like a monochrome outfit, and a blazer is the perfect fall accessory for a sweater dress look.
Mini Sweater Dress and Over-The-Knee Boots
Okay, this look is so good for a night of fun with your friends. That used to mean dinner and dancing all night for me, but it mostly looks like dinner and some wine now, ha! Anyway, I love an over-the-knee boot. You’ll never talk me out of them! They add height to us short gals, and they really elevate your outfit. You could wear knee high boots with this look too, but I think there’s something really cute about the boots meeting your sweater dress!
Sweater Dress Outfit in Camel
This midi length, the color of the dress, and the neckline are what caught my attention with this dress. I just love it, and it feels like you can wear this in so many different ways. I dressed it up a little bit here. In the fall and holiday season, I feel like there’s so much running around going on – whether you’re heading to a holiday meal out, a holiday party, a date night, or Thanksgiving Day, this is the type of outfit that’s great to have in your closet because you know it will work for a lot of occasions! The David Yurman bracelets are dainty, and I love that contrast with a sweater dress. Plus, they’re so pretty stacked!
What to Wear With a Turtleneck Sweater Dress
A turtleneck sweater dress is so cozy! I love it for work, girls’ night, or running errands on the weekend. Sometimes a turtleneck dress can feel like a lot of fabric. So, I love to add a belt so I don’t feel like I’m wearing a blanket. These boots are my most worn recently. They’re comfortable, but the heel is enough to give them a day or night look. I just got this coat as well, and it is so gorgeous in person. Click here to see a video I took in the coat.
Midi Sweater Dress for Work
A midi sweater dress is definitely work appropriate, and it’s also comfortable. A win-win, especially for any long days you might have in the office. I love the A-line silhouette of this dress. It feels like it was made for the office and drinks after work. However, a sweater dress is also great if you work from home! You’ll look put together for any video calls, but you can wear cozy socks and slippers.
Date Night Sweater Dress Outfit
I love this outfit with a leather jacket or leather blazer to add an edge to your look, and it also makes the outfit feel more like you’re going on a date. I would probably drape the leather jacket over my shoulders.
Monochrome Sweater Dress Outfit
If you’ve read my blog before, you’ll know I love monochrome outfits. Sweater dresses are perfect for monochrome outfits because you can wear boots and a bag that are a different material than your dress to add dimension to your look. The date night look above is the perfect example, and you’ve already seen a few other monochrome looks in this post.
Button Up Sweater Dress for Family Photos
I tried on this dress when I was in London, and I really loved it. I did not end up purchasing it because I already own several sweater dresses that work the same in my closet. But, I’m sharing it here because I think it’s a great option for family photos. It’s comfortable, it has has a tie waist, and either color choice is easy to build your family’s outfits around. It’s also office appropriate, and kind of perfect for a day when you’re going out for dinner or drinks after work. I love it with brown accessories! I linked quite a few options that I think will work with this look.
Black Sweater Dresses for Everyday Wear
I love outfits that you can just throw on for your typical day, whether it’s working in an office or running errands before a coffee date or meeting. So, I picked out a few dresses that I thought would work for that. You might want to wear some of them with a belt to add a little more shape to your look.
Cashmere Sweater Dresses to Wear With Boots
Cashmere sweater dresses are perfect for this time of the year! Pair with knee high or over the knee boots.
Postpartum Sweater Dress Outfit
There are a lot of postpartum outfit options out there, but I found myself wearing a cardigan sweater dress in the first couple of months after my baby was born. They’re helpful for nursing, pumping, and generally not needing pants, haha! Sometimes I would layer my dress with a t-shirt or turtleneck. This is actually my family photos outfit from last year! I had just had my baby, and I needed something super comfortable.
That’s all from me today! Did you find some outfit inspiration for a sweater dress look?
