How To Style Button Down Shirt For Spring

Hi there! It’s raining again today, you guys! That’s spring for you! This is the type of weather that is nice for a hot cup of afternoon coffee and writing a blog post. So, here we go! Let’s look at all the different ways you can style a button down shirt for spring. There are button down outfit ideas in this post, but I wanted to really focus on how you can wear this piece because it’s one of the most versatile items to have in your closet!

Okay, I love all types of blouses for the spring. It’s a great time of the year to wear them. And, sometimes there is nothing better than a button down. I love how they are so easy to style and layer, which is perfect for spring weather.

How To Half Tuck A Button Down

This is one of the easiest ways to wear a button down for an effortless, off-duty look like I’m wearing in the photos below. Tuck in one side of your button down and let the other half drape flat on your pants. I always like to unbutton the last button or two so the shirt drapes correctly without any holes. Basically, so you don’t accidentally expose your stomach! I also prefer to wear this look with high waist jeans because I think it helps add height!

You can also see how this looks in a recent video I did here. My outfit from above is linked below. If you go for this button down, be sure to size down one size as it runs quite oversized. I bought my normal size at first, and it was a mistake. I linked black ballet flats that I’ve seen in person and think are high quality!

Wearing Your Button Down Open

This one is for the busy moms, but I’ve always worn my button downs open so it’s truly for anyone. I love how comfortable and easy this type of outfit is, and I wear it a lot. Simply layer an oversized button down over a t-shirt or tank top. I love to do this with denim of any color, and I almost always add a belt to bring it all together. Layer Your Button Down With A Turtleneck or Long Sleeve T-Shirt

This is a look I love to do when you’re still in the colder days of spring. An oversize button down works best with this look. Pick your favorite turtleneck that isn’t too chunky or your favorite long sleeve t-shirt, and tuck it in. Then, add your button down! You can wear your button down tucked in, half tucked, or wear it untucked for a super casual look.

How To Wear Button Down Under A Blazer

A chambray button down is definitely a good closet staple to keep around. You can wear it with mostly any color blazer and with any type of bottoms. Anyway, another chic way to wear a button down, whether it’s chambray or striped or something more plain, is with a blazer. I styled it in one example with a neutral blazer, which is what I prefer, but it will look nice with a pastel for spring!

Okay, I love how a classic white button down looks under a leather blazer jacket. I would go for a more fitted button down for this look. A leather blazer jacket is a great option for spring. I’ve been eyeing this one for a long time. No matter which blazer you pick, this is one of my favorite ways to style these tops because it works for so many occasions, including for work.

How To Knot A Linen Button Down For Summer

When it’s warm outside and you want more of a summer vibe, or if you’re at the beach, it’s super easy to tie the front of your linen button down into a knot. I love this look with high waist jeans or high waist linen pants. If you’re having trouble keeping your shirt knotted, I love to use a hair tie to keep it in place. I just fold the fabric over the hair tie so you can’t see it.

I wear this look often with a bright striped linen button down, which is a favorite of mine once it’s warm. The colors are so summery and feel really happy. I linked this year’s version below.

Cinch Your Button Down With A Belt

Last but not least, I love oversized button downs that you can wear with or without a belt. You can take an oversized button down and cinch the waist with a brown or black belt for a classic look. Or, go for a bright belt for a fun outfit. You can also make a monochromatic look with a button down and a belt. For example, wear a blue button down with a blue belt and denim. I’ll put an outfit idea below because I think this would be really cute for spring or summer.
